posture you say…

Hi I’m Juliet and most of you know me. I want to share about my life’s experiences and work with movement and posture. I am a little obsessed (in a good way) and yoga is a huge part of it. Here’s some background and a peek behind my curtain on how I’ve been incorporating what I’ve seen, what I mean (mean what you say - say what you mean), and my commitment to study with the best out there!

My experience of being active through my life:

  • lots of high caliber sports in high school and college

  • performer and dancer through my twenties

  • yoga practitioner and figure model for part of my thirties

  • yoga teacher/practitioner for the part of my thirties and my forties (I’ll be 48 in a few weeks)

  • yoga educator last 6 years

What has moving and positioning my body taught me?

Well in a basic way - I love to move and I love to hold still/steady - to pose. I live in the world through my identifiers to move well and to maintain a certain posture, this connects me to time and space and expression. Whether that be in a performative way (sports, dance/modeling) or in an a introspective way (yoga practice).

What have I done as a teacher and educator with these understandings of being active?

I’ve studied and processed.

#1 SEEING, From the field hockey fields to zoom yoga classes (as long as your screen is on lol) to the intricate pathologies of my own body, I’m watching with an eye for detail and curiosity. I study the general way people move using a determinate of how fast (less controlled) and how far (distal vs proximal) as they create a movement/s to make decisions as a teacher of yoga. This info I hold and contemplate how it pertains to science and to theory so I can be accurate, kind and informative with my teachings. I love to watch people and the way they practice, so much so I have built a keen knowledge base and school with it. There’s a lot in to see a yoga room and it is all beautiful. All movements and most postures are great - yet there are caveats.

#2 COMMUNICATING, Although we may never be the best at yoga, there are ample reasons to communicate at a level that is high quality. The ‘best’ communicators are often those who can produce a result, reaction and/or resolve with efficacy, economy, and with compassion. How have I paired communication with my observations of how active bodies moves or posture? There’s been so many connections and curiousities, it never gets dull. You see..communication with oneself in yoga as well as from teacher to practitioner is a necessary effort needs a refined attention. For example…how you tell yourself to move is different than how you move upon hearing a teacher instruct you to do so; both great but physiologically and somatically very different. Beginning to understand these from a practitioners (your) perspective is priceless. I strive to continue to be the most accessible and wise communicator to myself and to others in this practice.

#3 LEARNING + APPLICATION, Last but not least my study for the last ten years has been primarily on joints. Orthokinematics, arthokinematics, and mechanical properties for moving and for posturing/posing, along with tissue mechanics. Understanding these studies allows me to safely communicate as a teacher in respect to the fact that everyones body is different. With this I can help practitioners promote their own joint health, motor control, novelty, repeatability, and gain access to a mental, physical and emotional connection.

I’ve studied with three women, two PhDs in PT also with an amazing educator in who has her masters in Biomechanics and challenges me every step of the way. I am currently enrolled to study pain science and the nervous system with the NOI group, an extensive course with PRI (postural restoration institute) on the pelvis, and an FRC (functional range conditioning + Kinistretch) course which is mythology for creating strength and tactility with the aim of improved mobility.

So, now that I’ve unfolded this for you, I hope you’ve caught some interest. I truly want folks in the area have access to excellent communication and education when it comes to yoga and movement. I will offer you not only my best communication, but also and most importantly communication that stems from many respected places of study and information. All to provide you with so many options that your practice never gets dull and you have a lifetime of moving and being well.

This course and a new upcoming branch of SYNB will be especially catered to those that want something different for theirs bodies from athletes to those who are injured, recovering from injury or surgery, and for those of us aging and/or starting yoga (again).
